Remeberance Day and World War One

With Remberance Day just a few days after our return to school, we have been dedicating art and history class to World War 1 in the big English class.
As have of course discussed the most important information about the Great War; the dates, the countries involved and the events which led up to the outbreak of war.
In order to make this topic more relateable to our pupils we have also been talking about the lives of everyday people during this war. How it affected the women and children left behind, the jobs children did to help their country fight, and also how animals, even pet dogs, were important and did their bit for the war effort.
In conjunction with our work in History class, we are reading the Childrens classic 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo.
In Art class we have been busy creating Poppys to make a Rememberance Day display, as well as looking at the poem  In Flanders Field by John McCrae.
